Redd Foxx starred on Sanford and Son as Fred G. Sanford, a junk dealer in the Los Angeles district of Watts. His son, Lamont (Demond Wilson), is thirty one and still lives at home. While Fred loves his son, he called him names such as “dummy” quite frequently, and would often threaten to give him “one across the lip.”

Another key component of the Sanford and Son plot is the fact that Sanford was portrayed as a widower. Frequent mentions are made to his wife Elizabeth, deceased two decades prior. Fred had to raise Lamont all alone and deeply missed his wife. Fred did not get along well with his sister in law Esther, who disapproved of her sister ever having married him.
