TV Show Plot For Julia

Prior to Julia, most shows that had African American characters portrayed them as servants. Diahann Carroll’s portrayal of Julia, however, changed all that. Julia was a single mother and a widow who works as a nurse in a doctor’s office. Her husband had died in the Vietnam War after being shot down in a fighter plane. Lloyd Nolan played the doctor, while Julia’s boyfriends were played by Fred Williamson and Paul Winfield.

While Julia is today remembered as a groundbreaking television show, at the time it angered a lot of prominent individuals in the African American community, who felt that the show was not politically engaged. As a lighthearted sitcom, it shied away from the “angry” antics of the activist community.
