TV Show Plot For JuliaPrior to Julia, most shows that had African American characters portrayed them as servants. Diahann Carroll’s portrayal of Julia, however, changed all that. Julia was a single mother and a widow who works as a nurse in a doctor’s office. Her husband had died in the Vietnam War after being shot down in a fighter plane. Lloyd Nolan played the doctor, while Julia’s boyfriends were played by Fred Williamson and Paul Winfield.
