Based on the popular radio show of the same name, Gunsmoke was set in the thriving cattle days of the 1870s in rural Kansas. Unlike most westerns, Gunsmoke was intended for adults rather than juveniles, and was critically acclaimed for its hardboiled realism. Marshall Matt Dillon, the show’s main character, was played by James Arness. Arness was cast on the recommendation of John Wayne, and would remain on the show throughout its twenty year duration. The show also featured Amanda Blake as Long Branch Saloon owner Miss Kitty Russell.

Throughout its long history, Gunsmoke featured numerous guest stars, including Jon Voight, June Lockhart, Aaron Spelling, Jodie Foster, Nick Nolte, Vera Miles, Ted Knight, Sam Elliot, Slim Pickens, Robert Urich, Pat Conway, Loretta Swit, and Jack Lord.
