TV Show Plot For GunsmokeBased on the popular radio show of the same name, Gunsmoke was set in the thriving cattle days of the 1870s in rural Kansas. Unlike most westerns, Gunsmoke was intended for adults rather than juveniles, and was critically acclaimed for its hardboiled realism. Marshall Matt Dillon, the show’s main character, was played by James Arness. Arness was cast on the recommendation of John Wayne, and would remain on the show throughout its twenty year duration. The show also featured Amanda Blake as Long Branch Saloon owner Miss Kitty Russell.
