TV Show Plot For Barney Miller

Barney Miller is perhaps best known for its “stage play” setting. Nearly the entire series was shot on a single set – the interior of the police station and the adjoining office of Captain Barney Miller, who was played by Hal Linden.

The plot of Barney Miller revolved around various detectives’ interactions with their suspects as witnesses, as well as the day to day interactions among the detectives in the office. Miller constantly battles bureaucracy and attempts to maintain peace and order in his office. He also constantly tries to get promoted, with little effect. Detective Ron Harris (Ron Glass) seems more interested in finishing his novel than his day job. The older Detective Phillip Fish (Abe Vigoda) refuses to retire. Officer Carl Levitt (Ron Carey) dreams of being promoted to Detective.
