TV Show Plot For Alice

When Alice Hyatt becomes a widow after her husband dies in a truck accident, she and her son Tommy leave New Jersey and travel to Los Angeles, where Alice hopes to launch a singing career. On the way there, however, their car breaks down in Phoenix, Arizona. Alice winds up taking a job in a diner called Mel’s. There, Alice works alongside grouchy owner Mel Sharples, as well as waitresses Vera Gorman and Florence Jean “Flo” Castleberry. Other notable Alice characters included Belle, who was played by Diane Ladd.

Alice was enormously successful, and ran for over 200 episodes into the mid-80s. By 1985, Lavin had apparently lost interest in the series and was absent for most of the last season. The show ended with Mel selling the diner off and giving each of the waitresses a $5,000 bonus, and with Alice finally scoring a record deal after nine years of trying.
