The band’s line-up originally consisted of Lionel Richie on piano and sax, Thomas McClary on guitar, Milan Williams on keyboards, William King on trumpet, Ronald La Pread on bass, and Walter Orange on drums. Members would usually alternate on vocal duties. Richie eventually left the Commodores in order to pursue a solo career. He would be replaced by J.D. Nicholas, formerly of Heatwave.
