The American performer Yvonne Elliman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on the 29th of December 1951. Her father was of Irish descent, while her mother was half Chinese and half Japanese. Elliman grew up in Honolulu, where she graduated from President Theodore Roosevelt High School in the year 1970.

It was in London in the 1970s where Elliman launched her singing career, performing in assorted nightclubs. She eventually landed a record deal and worked for a while as a back up singer for Eric Clapton, performing on many of his hits throughout the 1970s, including the tune “I Shot the Sheriff.” For the rock album Jesus Christ Superstar, Elliman sang the role of Mary Magdalene. She was later cast in the Broadway and film versions of the musical. Her first hit was the soothing ballad “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” from the show. It became a major single in the United States, although Helen Reddy would later record a better known version of the track. In the year 1974, Elliman was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in Jesus Christ Superstar, making her the first Pacific Islander ever to be nominated for a Golden Globe in acting.

Elliman’s subsequent singles included “Hello Stranger,” “If I Can’t Have You,” and “Love Me.” In the year 2004, Elliman released an album featuring material she had penned herself, entitled Simple Needs.
