Walter Murphy and The Big Apple BandLyrics A Fifth Of Beethoven

Murphy grew up in New York City, where he attended the Manhattan School of Music, studying classical piano and jazz. Upon graduation, Murphy worked for a while as the arranger for the Tonight Show Band and Doc Severinsen before finding employment as a writer of jingles.

In the 1970s, as the disco craze swept the dance floors of New York City, Murphy began experimenting with fusing classical music in to disco songs. He made a demo of several of his efforts and mailed them off to every single record company in town. Murphy’s efforts generated little to no response. Only his rendition of the “Symphony No. 5 in ‘C’ Minor” by Beethoven had any real interest for the labels. Eventually, Larry Uttal, who had a label called Private Stock Records, invited him in to the studio to record his “Fifth of Beethoven.”

Despite the fact that Murphy played all the instruments on the song, his record label thought that it would have a better chance if it were credited to a group rather than to an individual. Thus, Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band was “formed.” Shortly after its release, the label found out that there already was a group calling themselves the Big Apple Band. Subsequent releases to the song were credited to the Walter Murphy Band.
