The 70's American vocal group the Temptations, often called the Temps or the Tempts by their fans, were one of the most successful acts on the Motown record label, with a long career and repertoire that included such disparate styles as doo wop, adult contemporary, soul, rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock, disco, and funk.

The band started in Detroit, Michigan in the early 1960s. They were originally known as the Elgins. Throughout their entire history, which extends to the present day, the Temptations has always boasted a five man line up including singers and dancers. The Temptations are known not only for their music, but for their tight choreography. They are considered by many to be the Beatles of soul music.

All in all, the Temptations have sold in excess of twenty two million units around the world. They are one of the most successful outfits in the history of popular music. In the 1960s, the Temptations were the most important and visible male singing group.
