Sammy Johns Artist Bio and LyricsThe country singer and songwriter Sammy Johns is perhaps best remembered for his hit from the mid-70s, “Chevy Van.” The song was notable for its sexual subject matter in the liberated 1970s. It tells the tale of a man who picks up a woman while he’s traveling on the road. The single would sell over three million copies and make it to the top of the charts.
Johns started playing music as a child in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. He started a band called the Devilles while still a teenager. He later moved to Atlanta, where he would generate attention and eventually score a record deal. His first album, Early Morning Love, was released in the year 1974. Besides “Chevy Van,” Johns is known primarily as a songwriter for other recording artists. After the success of the single, Johns was signed to Warner Curb and asked to work on the soundtrack to a film called The Van starring a then unknown Danny DeVito. In 1982, his single “Falling for You” was released. Elektra became interested, and gave Johns a deal. Two singles, “Common Man” and “Love Me Off the Road,” resulted. John Conlee would later record a chart topping cover of “Common Man.” Sammy Johns has written music for such renowned country stars as Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, and Sammy Krenshaw. Jennings’s rendition of Johns’s “America” was featured in the year 1985 on a nationally televised event to commemorate the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. |
