Lee Michaels Artist Bio and LyricsThe American singer and multi-instrumentalist Lee Michaels was born on the 24th of November 1945 in Los Angeles. Michaels is perhaps best known for his hit song of the 1970s, “Do You Know What I Mean.” Michaels is alternately known as Mike Olsen. He launched his career with a surf rock band called the Sentinels, which featured John Barbata, who would later become famous as a member of the band Jefferson Airplane. Michaels and Barbata would go on to play in another band together, the Strangers, with Joel Scott Hill.
In the late 1960s, Michaels relocated to San Francisco. He was soon signed to A&M Records, who released his debut album, Carnival of Life, in the year 1967. Michaels distinguished himself with his choice of the Hammond organ as a primary instrument. Usually, his studio and live accompaniment was comprised of a single drummer. With this odd bare bones approach to music, Michaels attained something of a cult following in the San Francisco Bay Area. He did not attain any real commercial success, however, until the release of his fifth album, which boasted two hits – “Do You Know What I Mean” and “Can I Get A Witness.” He would later record for Columbia Records, but never again attained the same level of success. The albums of Lee Michaels include Carnival of Life, Recital, Lee Michaels, Barrel, Fifth, Space and First Takes, Lee Michaels Live, Nice Day for Something, Tailface, Saturn Rings, The Lee Michaels Collection, Absolute Lee, and Hello: The Very Best of Lee Michaels, a compilation released in the year 2004. |
