For a while, Jennifer Warnes changed her last name to Warren, after she was told that Warnes was too difficult. Then the actress Jennifer Warren came on to the scene, which led to tremendous confusion the world of popular culture. Warnes thus reverted to the stage name “Jennifer,” before returning to Jennifer Warnes.

Warnes was offered her first recording contract at the tender age of 7. Her father turned it down, feeling that his daughter was too young. For her professional debut, she sang the Star Spangled Banner, backed by three hundred accordions, at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium at the age of nine.

Upon finishing high school, Warnes was offered an opera scholarship. She decided to sing folk music, which was popular in those days, instead. In the late 1960s, she would sign with Parrot Records and record her first album.

In the year 1968, Warnes was cast in the Los Angeles production of the musical Hair. Two years later, she befriended Leonard Cohen, who would have a significant impact on her career and become a life-long friend. Her first major hit was in 1977, “Right Time of the Night.”
