Janis Joplin grew up in Texas. She moved to San Francisco at a young age, where she eventually joined Big Brother and the Holding Company, a blues rock band that was attaining some prominence in the hippie community of the Bay Area. The band’s breakthrough single was “Piece of My Heart,” which would make Janis Joplin one of the biggest stars of the 1960s. In late 1968, Janis Joplin decided to leave the band in order to pursue a solo career.

At first, she used the Kozmic Blues Band as a backing band. This was not successful, however, and so she began performing with the Full Tilt Boogie Band. While recording her second solo album Pearl, Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose in the year 1970.

The albums of Janis Joplin include The Typewriter Tape, Cheap Thrills, I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, Pearl, Live at Winterland ’68, In Concert, Janis Joplin’s Greatest Hits, Janis, Anthology, Farewell Song, Cheaper Thrills, Janis (3 Discs), , Big Brother & the Holding Company, Essential Songs, The Collection, Live at Woodstock: August 19, 1969, Box of Pearls, and Super Hits.
