Heatwave Artist Bio and Lyrics

The popular rhythm and blues band Heatwave featured an international line up that included Brits Roy Carter and Rod Temperton, Czechoslovak drummer Ernest “Bilbo” Berger, Jamaican Eric Johns, Spaniard Mario Mantese, and Americans Keith Wilder and Johnnie Wilder Jr. Heatwave were perhaps best known for their songs “Always and Forever,” “Boogie Nights,” and “The Groove Line.” They are regarded as one of the funkiest dance acts from the era of disco. The group started out in West Germany, where brothers Johnnie and Keith Wilder were serving in the military. After they were discharged, they remained in the country and continued performing with a variety of different bands. They then relocated to the United Kingdom, where they would hook up with the keyboardist Rod Temperton.

It was in the 1970s, while they were touring the club circuit of London, that Heatwave was able to refine their sound, fusing disco and funk in to an inventive new style. They were soon signed to Epic Records. Producer and guitarist Barry Blue joined their roster, as did Jesse Whitten, who would be replaced by Roy Carter after he was murdered in Chicago. The band began work on their first album, Too Hot to Handle, in the year 1976.

In 1977, the band scored their first major hit with “Boogie Nights,” which was soon followed up with “Always and Forever.” They broke up in the early 1980s, reforming briefly for a stint in the 1990s.

The albums of Heatwave include Too Hot to Handle, Central Heating, Hot Property, Candles, and Current.
