Harry Chapin Artist Bio and LyricsThe American singer and songwriter Harry Chapin was born on the 7th of December 1942. He initially wanted to become a documentary filmmaker. His film from 1968, Legendary Champions, was nominated for an Oscar. In the early 1970s, however, he began focusing on music full time. He began playing clubs in New York alongside Tim Scott, Ron Palmer, and Big John Wallace.
In addition to his music career, Harry Chapin began to explore social activism in the 1970s. He helped raise money to combat hunger and helped start the organization World Hunger Year. Harry Chapin also released a book of poetry in that decade, Looking…Seeing, before returning to the music industry with the release of the album On the Road to Kingdom Come. In the year 1981, Harry Chapin died in a car accident. He was on his way to a concert when his car was rear ended by a tractor trailer. He was 38 years old. The truck’s owner, Supermarkets General, were forced to pay his widow, Sandy, $12 million in litigation.
