The American power trio Grand Funk Railroad was formed in the late 1960s. Although it took a while for the critics to warm up to their sound, the band’s original line up scored a number of hits throughout the 1970s. In the year 1970, they were awarded with four gold albums – the most for any American band that year. Grand Funk Railroad have sold well over twenty five million records around the world and continue to sell out arenas. They are frequently cited as the world’s loudest rock and roll band. The band’s current line up is also known as the American Band, after their hit single “We’re an American Band.”

Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher started the band in Flint, Michigan in the year 1969. Terry Knight became the band’s manager. He is responsible for naming the band after Grand Trunk Western Railroad, the well known Michigan railway line.

Grand Funk Railroad first came to prominence with a high profile gig at the Atlanta Pop Festival. The band was signed to Capitol Records shortly thereafter.
