Freddy Fender Artist Bio and LyricsBorn Baldemar Huerta on the 4th of June 1947 in San Benito Texas, the Mexican American country and rock and roll musician Freddy Fender is perhaps best known for his work as a solo artist. He also performed in the bands the Texas Tornados and Los Super Seven.
Fender first became popular with the release of his hit song “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” in the year 1959. Despite the popularity of the single, Fender’s career was temporarily put on hold when he and a band member were imprisoned for possession of marijuana in the spring of 1960. After two years, he was released thanks to the intervention of Governor Jimmie Davis, who was also a musician and songwriter. As a condition of his probation, Fender was told to “stay away from music,” presumably meaning to stay away from establishments that served alcohol. By the end of the 1960s, Fender found himself back in Texas, working as a mechanic and only playing music on weekends. He made a triumphant return to music in the late 1970s, scoring a country hit with “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” The albums of Freddy Fender include Before the Next Teardrop Falls, Recorded Inside Louisiana State Prison, Before the Next Teardrop Falls, Are You Ready for Freddy?, Since I Met You Baby, Rock N’ Country, Your Cheatin’ Heart, If You’re Ever in Tears, The Best of Freddy Fender, If You Don’t Love Me, Merry Christmas / Feliz Navidad, Swamp Gold, Tex Mex, The Texas Balladeer, Together We Drifted Apart, Favorite Ballads, and Freddy Fender Live. |
