Born Freda Charcelia Payne on the 19th of September 1942 in Detroit, Michigan, Freda Payne is an esteemed 70's African American actress and singer. Her sister is Scherrie Payne, the Supremes’ last lead singer. As a teenager, Payne studied music and listened to jazz singers. She soon began singing radio commercial jingles, before catching the attention of local producers.

Payne moved to New York City in the year 1963. At that point she started working with such performers as Bill Cosby, Quincy Jones, and Pearl Bailey. It was not long before her debut jazz album, After the Lights Go Down Low and Much More!!!, was released. During this period, she also made guest appearances on a variety of television programs, including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Merv Griffin Show.

Payne scored her first major hit with “Band of Gold” in the early 1970s. Her other major singles included “You Brought the Joy,” “Deeper and Deeper,” and “Bring the Boys Back Home,” a protest against the Vietnam War.
