Dr John Artist Bio and LyricsBorn Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. on the 21st of November 1940, Dr. John is a famous 70's singer, songwriter, and piano player. His music is a playful blend of rock, blues, and boogie woogie.
Dr. John was born and raised in New Orleans. Throughout the 1950s, he worked as a session musician in his home town. As a guitarist in his early career, he was known under the name Mac Rebennack. He then moved on to bass. After his hand was injured by a gunshot (he was protecting a bandmate during a confrontation), Dr. John would start playing piano. Professor Longhair has been cited as a major influence on Dr. John’s musical development. It was in the 1960s and 1970s that Dr. John would attain fame for his stage shows that featured voodoo-esque ceremonies, as well as his music – a potent mixture of psychedelic rock and rhythm and blues. He is perhaps best known for his song “Right Place, Wrong Time.” In recent years, Dr. John has performed at many relief benefits after his home town was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. The albums of Dr. John include Gris Gris, Babylon, Remedies, The Sun, Moon & Herbs, Gumbo, In the Right Place, Desitively Bonnaroo, Hollywood Be Thy Name, City Lights, Tango Palace, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack, The Brightest Smile In Town, In a Sentimental Mood, Goin’ Back to New Orleans, Television, Afterglow, Trippin’ Live, Anutha Zone, Duke Elegant, Creole Moon, All By Hisself: Live at the Lonestar, N’Awlinz: Dis Dat or d’Udda, Live at Montreux 1995, Sippiana Hericane, and Mercernary. |
