In 1963, he graduated from Iona Preparatory School. He would drop out of Villanova University before finishing his degree. At campus events, McLean had garnered a reputation as a popular folk singer. Thanks to a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, he began touring the state, thereby reaching a wider audience. McLean was mentored by Pete Seeger. Alongside Seeger, he traveled up and down the Hudson River on the famous Clearwater boat tour in the late 1960s to protest environmental pollution. That tour is widely credited for helping clean up the Hudson River.

“American Pie,” McLean’s most famous song, deals with the plane crash that would kill the Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and Ritchie Valens. The phrase “The Day the Music Died” is a famous line taken from the song. Some of McLean’s other famous songs include “Vincent” and “Winterwood.”

The albums of Don McLean include Tapestry, American Pie, Don McLean, Playin’ Favorites, Homeless Brother, Solo, Prime Time, The Very Best of Don McLean, Chain Lightning, Believers, The Flight of Dragons, Dominion, For the Memories I & II, Love Tracks, And I Love You So, Headroom, Christmas, Favorites and Rarities, The River of Love, Christmas Dreams, Don McLean Sings Marty Robbins, Starry Starry Night, You’ve Got to Share, The Western Album, Christmas Time!, and Rearview Mirror.
