Holmes studied music at Fredonia State College, but left to enlist during the Vietnam War. He spent three years (1967-1969) singing in the United States Army Chorus. Afterwards, he remained in Washington, D.C., where he would launch his civilian career. He began touring the East Coast, singing in nightclubs throughout the region.

In the first half of the 1970s, Holmes became a Las Vegas show man. Until the year 2006, he had a headlining show at Harrah’s Las Vegas Casino. Upon leaving, the Casino would rename its main showroom in Clint Holmes’s honor. Between the years of 1990 and 1995, Holmes was the host of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge on the BET network; Holmes still serves as a host for the final matches. The popular local jazz/rhythm and blues band Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns features many of Clint Holmes’s own band members.

The albums of Clint Holmes include If Not Now and A Night to Remember.
