Cat Stevens Artist Bio and LyricsBorn Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948, this prominent singer, songwriter, and musician performed under the name Cat Stevens between the years of 1966 and 1978. After converting to Islam, he changed his name to Yusuf Islam.
Throughout the 1970s, Cat Stevens would sell well over sixty million records around the world. His best known songs include “Peace Train,” “Wild World,” “Morning Has Broken,” “Moonshadow,” and “The First Cut is the Deepest.” He converted to Islam in the year 1977 and left the music world for much of the following decade in order to devote himself to Muslim causes. After the September 11th attacks on the United States, he publicly condemned the actions of the terrorists and insisted that they were inconsistent with the teachings of the Muslim faith. He would return to the world of popular music with the release of his latest album, An Other Cup, in the year 2006. Today, Yusuf Islam is known for being a peace activist. He has been given numerous awards for his promotion of world peace.
