BuoysLyrics Timothy

The Buoys are perhaps best known for their song “Timothy,” a song by Rupert Holmes. The song dealt with the theme of cannibalism, and was deliberately intended to get banned. Holmes picked the Buoys to record the song. The song wound up making it to Number 17 on the charts in the year 1971. Rupert Holmes would write another song for the band, entitled “Give Up Your Guns.” The song was not as successful on the charts as “Timothy.” Among other songs composed by Rupert Holmes for the band, “Tomorrow,” “The Prince of Thieves,” and “Blood Knot” are the best known.

In the 1990s, Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzik formed a new band, Dakota. Their focus was on folk rock. In 1993, a Buoys compilation album was released featuring eighteen of the band’s best known songs. It features a well known photograph of the band’s original five members standing beneath an awning upon which is written “Timothy.” According to the webmaster of Rupert Holmes’s website, this album is unauthorized and the band has not received any royalties from the sales.

Some of the Buoys’ other songs include “Tell Me Heaven is Here,” “Castles,” “Streams Together,” “Good Lovin’,” “Pittsburgh Steel,” “Absent Friend,” “These Days,” “Sunny Days,” “Look Back America,” and “Liza’s Last Ride.”
