Brewer and Shipley Artist Bio and LyricsThe folk rock outfit Brewer and Shipley were popular in the 1970s. It was comprised of Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley, both singers and songwriters. They were known for their amazing guitar playing, tight vocal harmonies, and political lyrics about such subjects as the Vietnam War and the associated struggles for freedom in an unjust world. They are perhaps best known for their songs “One Toke Over the Line,” “Shake Off the Demon,” and “Tarkio Road,” all of which made it to the charts in the early years of the 1970s.
Both Brewer and Shipley were from the Midwest originally, but decided to relocate to the country’s entertainment capital, Los Angeles, in order to focus on music full time. During this prolific period, the two produced their first albums, Down in L.A. and Weeds. Eventually, they decided to return back to the Midwest, despite the fact that they were leaving behind their friends Buffalo Springfield and the Association. They wound up in Kansas City, where the pair etched out a meager existence playing small college towns. After having scored a regular gig in Tarkio, Missouri, they named their next album after that town. It became their most successful work, featuring the single “One Toke Over the Line,” which was initially written as a joke. The albums of Brewer & Shipley include Down in L.A., Weeds, Tarkio, Shake off the Demon, Rural Space, ST-11621, Welcome to Riddle Bridge, SHANGHAI, Heartland, and 2001’s One Toke Over the Line: The Best of Brewer & Shipley. |
