Average White Band Artist Bio and LyricsThis Scottish 70’s band had been playing together since the mid 60’s, and later created Average White Band in 1972. They got their big break a year later, when they were the opening act for Eric Clapton’s Rainbow concert (which went to become Clapton’s return to stardom). The band’s sound was a complementary blend of contemporary soul and dance pop.
Band member Malcolm Duncan played tenor and soprano sax. Roger Ball played alto, keyboards and baritone sax. Robbie McIntyre was the drum player. Onnie McIntyre was the lead guitarist. Hamish Stuart was a lead vocalist and played guitar. Alan Gorrie played bass and was a lead vocalist. The Average White Band released their moderately successful debut album ‘Show Your Hand’. Their third album ‘Cut the Cake’ (1975) contained the hit single ‘Pick Up the Pieces’. In 1977, they recorded the album ‘Benny and Us’ with Ben E. King. It was the band’s second album ‘Average White Band’ in 1974 that was a huge success within the American market. The band spent nearly the next two years touring across America. Member Robbie McIntosh died on September 23th, 1974 during the tour. He overdosed on heroine. Then band went back on tour two weeks later, using backup drummers. Steve Ferrone later joined the band as its permanent drummer. |
