5th Dimension Artist Bio and Lyrics

This 70’s band is known for its soul-inspired harmonic sound. The band broke up in 1975, when two of its five members left to form their own band. The remaining band members went on to produce the album ‘Earthbound’ later that year.

Florence LaRue Gordon, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr, Lamont McLemor, and Ron Townson made up the members of the 5th Dimension band. Jim Webb was their main songwriter. Bones Howe was in charge of the band’s arrangements and production.

When the band members first came together, they were known as the Versatiles. Soon after, they changed their name to the HiFis. As the HiFis, they toured as part of the Ray Charles Revue. It was then that the 5th Dimension signed up with Soul City Records and make their big break in the music industry.

Top albums of the 5th Dimension included ‘The Magic Garden’, ‘Stone Soul Picnic’, and ‘Aquarius’. They captured the world’s attention with majestic songs such as ‘Up, Up and Away’. After the ‘Aquarius’ album came out in 1970, the 5th Dimension slide down the music charts. Their songs become slick and refined, as their sound lost some of the soul that made them stars in the first place.
